What is the key to long term health and fitness?

Well this is one of the most interesting questions we’ve been asked so far actually.

And if we had one clear definitive answer, we’d all be millionaires (wouldn’t that be nice…!), but it is something we think about a lot, and talk to all our clients about on a regular basis.

The first thing that we understand is that fitness is a process not a goal.
It’s not a destination that you arrive at like you’re going from point A to point B. You’ll be driven by a series of smaller goals along the way, but it’s something that you’ll be working on for the long term. If you can get yourself out of the habit of thinking about going on a diet and doing massive workouts ‘to look good on holiday’ and just focus on being consistently active, then getting ready to go on holiday will be much less stressful (and you’ll have more energy to do more while you’re actually on holiday – bonus!).

The second thing we think about is that its hard work and you have to want to be fit and healthy.
If you really want to enjoy the benefits of being fit and healthy, you’ll find a way to get out there and do something about it.

The third thing we focus on is that you have to look at this journey realistically.
By that we mean, If you’re juggling a full time career, a young family and trying to fit in some time with your mates and the odd round of golf, then setting yourself the task of getting to the gym twice a day every day is unrealistic. You have to make time for exercise to develop that all round health and fitness, but rather than it being forced into your life in short, sharp bursts, you’ve got to gradually build it in and as you get fitter and stronger, it gets easier to maintain it all and you’ll get so much more pleasure out of it all.

Whichever way you choose to keep yourself fit -team sports, individual sports, parkrun, bootcamp, using a personal trainer, in the gym, outdoor training, on your own or with mates, fit it into your life gradually and have fun with it.

The more fun you have, the more likely you are to carry on doing it.

Happy training!
